“A musician with a radio show.” That’s how Asher Benrubi describes himself. Those who listened to Indianapolis radio station WNAP-FM (93.1) in the late 1970s knew him as “Adam Smasher” or “The Smash.”

Benrubi began his musical career in 1967 at Shortridge High School with the band Frenchie and Oui Oui’s. He graduated from Indiana University with a degree in political science.

“I wanted to be a judge,” Benrubi said in a recent phone interview. His voice was as vibrant as ever, and my 18-year-old self was transported back to 1979.

While at Indiana, he was the lead singer with Pure Funk Rhythm Ensemble, which became Roadmaster. Both bands featured future John Mellencamp bass player Toby Myers. It was during the Pure Funk and Roadmaster days that Benrubi sported an afro that would make Pacers great Darnell Hillman
