Bagaikan juru kamera yg percaya diri, Claude Levi-Strauss senang memilih sudut pengelihatan yg tak lazim. Ketika sejawatnya melihat budaya dengan sudut pandang yg biasa, Levi Strauss memandang perkembangan budaya melalui lensa makanan. Cara memandang itu ia tuangkan dalam esainya yg terbit pada pertengahan 1960-an, "Le Triangle Culinaire" ("THe Culinary Triangle").
Dalam esai itu, ia mencontohkan bagaimana orang-orang suku Amazon membedakan antara memanggang dan merebus. "Merebus menyediakan sarana konservasi yg utuh atas daging dan cairannya, sedangkan memanggang di ikuti oleh kerusakan dan kehilangan," tulisnya "Jadi yang satu menunjukan ekonomi, yg lain pemborosan; yg terakhir aritokratis yg terdahulu udik."
Cara pandang yg berbeda itu pula yg membuat nama Levi-Strauss menjulang. Introduction

In 1650, the Christian villagers of Kaibobo 0) in southwest Seram decided to send their children to the village shaman for instruction and initiation in the traditional ancestral rites of Seram; the governor in Ambon responded by sending troops who took hostages to enforce order, if not Christianity. In 1653, the hukum of Hatiwe in Ambon bay, Jan Pays, was beheaded and quartered because, although previously he had been honored by the VOC, he was accused of being a "Muslim in his heart", a traitor and a "false Christian". (2) On the 10th of January, 1656, the villagers of Waai (eastern Ambon) erected a huge wooden phallus to ensure the fertility of their wives. The village chief and thirteen elders were summoned to Ambon, where they were marched through the town, severely caned and covered with the excrement hurled at them; they were sentenced to permanent banishment in Banda, bearing signs on their chests : "This is an idolater ".(3)
