George Roger Waters (born 6 September 1943 in Great Bookham, Surrey, UK) is an English musician, singer-songwriter and composer.

Roger Waters was the main lyricist for the classic British rock band Pink Floyd. He, along with Syd Barrett, Nick Mason, and Richard Wright, formed the band in 1965 and released their first album, "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn" in 1967. In 1968, Syd Barrett was replaced by guitarist/singer David Gilmour. He and Gilmour were the main creative forces behind the albums "Meddle," "Dark Side of the Moon," and "Wish You Were Here"; Waters eventually became the primary songwriter, being the driving force behind "Animals", and "The Wall" as well as the sole songwriter of "The Final Cut". Waters became well-known for being an intense perfectionist and his controlling nature alienated the rest of the band. "The Final Cut", released in 1983, was essentially a Roger Waters solo album "performed by Pink Floyd" as the credits stated. This would be the group's last album

Born on September 6, 1943 in Surrey, England, Roger was only an infant when his father, Eric Fletcher Waters was killed in action in Anzio, Italy during World War II. Roger really never got over the loss of his father, or the rage towards the system which took his father from him. Roger as a teen joined the Naval Cadets, which didn't last too long. He didn't like it, so instead quit and received a dishonerable discharge. Most of his songs after Wish You Were Here are his personal dealings with both of these ghosts from the past. It wasn't until The Flickering Flame do we hear Roger start to make peace with his demons.

In his early 20s, Roger attended Regent Street Poly in London, studying architecture. He formed a band with fellow classmates Richard Wright, Nick Mason and Clive Metcalf. Calling themselves "Sigma 6", they went on to change their name (and management) several times. T-set, The Architectural Abdabs and The Screaming Abdabs were a few of the names chosen. Later, after Clive had left, a childhood friend of Roger's from Cambridge, Syd Barrett, started si

Waters, Roger

Bass player, singer, songwriter

Roger Waters rose to prominence as the guiding hand behind the sometimes compellingly philosophical and sometimes bombastic thematic content of Pink Floyd following the departure of the group's first creative driving force, Syd Barrett. With Barrett at the helm, the group pioneered a style of lyrical whimsy combined with spacey musical backing. Following Barrett's departure, Waters assumed more and more control of the group's creative focus, steering the band into lyrical considerations of madness, celebrity, and mortality bolstered by sonic textures that included sustained blues guitar notes, sound effects, spoken word, multi-track overdubs, ethereal synthesizer and jazzy piano. The result was a patented Pink Floyd experience enjoyed by stoners and straights alike, which brought the band international, critical and public acclaim, massive wealth, and continued strife within the band over creative control. Personal conflicts between Waters and the other three members of the band led to the group's temporary dissolution in the earl
