    Marshall McLuhan was a Canadian philosopher considered one of the most significant media theorists of the twentieth century. He said, "The medium is the message" and dramatically changed media and communication. McLuhan was born in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, and received his education in Canada and England before joining the academic profession to propagate his media, technology, and society theories.

    McLuhan's work was based on the effects of media on human life, and he could forecast future tendencies years in advance. His idea of the "global village" was prophetic of the Internet as he could show how technology would bring the world closer together and into familiar territory. His writings, including Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man and The Gutenberg Galaxy, which focused on the impact of various media on society, contributed to the development of media ecology.
