West End actress Sophiya Haque dies at 41

A popular stage actress, Haque also played barmaid Poppy Morales in Coronation Street in 2008-09.

"We are saddened to hear the terrible news of Sophiya's death," said a statement from ITV.

"She was a vibrant and beautiful actress who was a pleasure to have around during her time on Coronation Street. Our thoughts are with her family and friends at this very sad time."

Born in Portsmouth, she became a familiar face on television during a seven-year stint as a presenter of MTV Asia.

A talented singer and dancer, she moved to Mumbai in 1997 and starred in a number of films. On her return in 2002, she starred in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Bollywood-inspired musical Bombay Dreams and took a leading role in the musical adaptation of The Far Pavilions. More recently, she starred in Wah! Wah! Girls at London's Theatre Royal Stratford East and Peacock theatre.

The BBC Asian Network radio host and comedian Adil Ray described the actress, external on Twitter as "our dear friend".

Sophiya Haque (14 June 1971 – 17 January 2013) was an English actress, singer, video jockey and dancer. She is best known for playing the role of Poppy Morales in Coronation Street between 2008 and 2009.

Early life

Haque was born Syeda Sophia Haque in Portsmouth, Hampshire to a Bangladeshi father and a British Jewish mother.[1] She was the youngest of three daughters.

She was brought up by her mother, Thelma, a schoolteacher. She attended Priory School in Portsmouth, and took dancing lessons from the age of two and a half at Mary Forrester's Rainbow School of Dance before moving at the age of 13 to London (where she

Born in Portsmouth as Syeda Sophia Haque to a Bangladeshi father and British mother, she was the youngest of three children. Having moved to London at the age of thirteen she trained full-time at the Arts Educational Schools. As the lead singer in the band called Akasa she got a record deal with Warner Brothers in 1988, before working as a presenter for MTV Asia.

Haque moved to India in 1997 and starred in a string of films with some of the biggest names in Bollywood, before returning to the UK to appear in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Bombay Dreams, a musical version of The Far Pavilions. She also appeared alongside Angelina Jolie in the hit film Wanted and had most recently appeared in Privates on Parade as part of the Michael Grandage season in the West End.
