Smith, who passed away in 2016 and is survived by his wife Racquel and their three children, William, Wynter and Lisa, made an immediate impact on the football field for the Saints as a rookie in 2004, when he recorded 7.5 sacks and five forced fumbles and was selected to the Pro Football Weekly All-Rookie team. Two seasons later in 2006, he led the club with 10.5 takedowns and added three forced fumbles as he powered a club defensively that reached the NFC Championship for the first time and he was selected to the Pro Bowl. Smith attended Notre Dame High School, where he competed in football, basketball and ran track. He received honorable-mention All-county honors in both football and basketball.

College career

He began his college career playing football at the NCAA Division II level at Northwood University. He appeared in 8 games in 2010 as a freshman, making 22 tackles (one for loss) and one forced fumble. After the season, he transferred to Riverside City College in his hometown

He played college football for the Ohio State Buckeyes and was selected by the New Orleans Saints in the first round of the 2004 NFL draft, where he played for the entirety of his career. Smith was shot and killed during an altercation after an alcohol-related traffic crash.
