Anthony Charles "The Godfather" Zinni
General, U.S. Marine Corps

Anthony Charles Zinni was born on 17 September 1943 in Conshohocken, PA. In 1965, he graduated from Villanova University with a Bachelor's degree in Economics. Since he was a member of the Naval Reserve Officers' Training Corps at Villanova, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps. After completion of the Basic School, he was assigned to the 2nd Marine Division, where he served as a Platoon Commander, Company Executive Officer, and Company Commander in the 1st Battalion, 6th Marines. He also served as a Company Commander in the 1st Infantry Training Regiment during this tour.

In 1967, Zinni was assigned as an Infantry Battalion Advisor to the Vietnamese Marine Corps. Following the Vietnam War, he was ordered to the Basic School where he served as a Tactics Instructor, Platoon Commander, and Company Executive Officer. In 1970, he returned to Vietnam as a Company Commander in 1st Battalion, 5th Marines where he was wounded, evacuated, and subsequently assigned to the 3rd Force Service

General Anthony C. Zinni, United States Marine Corps (Retired), was born in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania in 1943 and raised in the Philadelphia area. He attended Saints Cosmos and Damian grade school and Saint Matthew's High School in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania. He currently resides in Williamsburg, Virginia.

MILITARY EXPERIENCE

General Zinni joined the Marine Corps' Platoon Leader Class program in 1961 and was commissioned an infantry second lieutenant in 1965 upon graduation from Villanova University. He held numerous command and staff assignments that included platoon, company, battalion, regimental, Marine Expeditionary Unit, and Marine Expeditionary Force command. His staff assignments included service in operations, training, special operations, counter-terrorism, and manpower billets. He has been a tactics and operations instructor at several Marine Corps schools and was selected as a fellow on the Chief of Naval Operations Strategic Studies Group.

Gen. Anthony (Tony) C. Zinni is a retired four-star United States Marine Corps general. Throughout his career, he served in numerous diplomatic roles, including as the U.S. special envoy to Israel and the Palestinian Authority, and on missions to Pakistan, Somalia, Eritrea, and Ethiopia. He retired from the U.S. Marine Corps in 2000 after a 39-year career that saw him visit over 70 countries in various command assignments. From 1997 to 2000, he served as the commander-in-chief of the U.S. Central Command.

During his military tenure, Zinni earned 23 personal awards and 37 unit, service, and campaign awards. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1961 and was commissioned as an infantry second lieutenant in 1965 after completing his undergraduate degree in economics at Villanova University. He went on to earn graduate degrees in international relations from Salve Regina University and in management and supervision from Central Michigan University.
