Zumba Fitness is one of the most favored fitness programs all around the globe. On a weekly basis there are approximately 14 million classes held! This number is astonishing since Zumba as a fitness trend started merely in 2001. It was created by fitness and dance instructor Beto Perez. Ever since its kick off, Zumba has gained massive popularity worldwide. Most Zumba instructors and faithful Zumba enthusiasts swear by the adage “Zumba is not just a workout, it’s a way of life.”
You can burn up to 730 calories in a single Zumba session lasting an hour! However, Zumba Fitness is much more than a great way to burn calories, lose fat, and improve your cardiovascular health. After all, many different fitness programs could boast of those merits. Zumba Fitness is a unique workout routine because it is multifaceted. It integrates and incorporates fitness, entertainment, and fun into an all-out dance party.
Why is Zumba a one-of-a-kind Fitness Program?
There are a wide range of age groups participating in Zumba, ranging from infants to children to senior citizens. Zumba Beto Perez, of Colombia (South America) is the creator, founder of Zumba®, and director of the national Zumba Master Trainer Team. He is a professional dancer and the former choreographer for Shakira and other high profile celebrities. Zumba is Colombian slang meaning to move fast and have fun. The aerobics workout is famous for its Latin-inspired dance steps - Salsa, Merengue, Flamenco and Samba. Zumba's success certainly stems from its Latin roots, but nowadays Perez is mixing it up. In his 2008 video series and in your current Zumba classes, you'll hear a little of country music, funk, and rock and roll, (of course you'll still hear your favorite Latin music). Adding a variety of world influences, including Indian harmonies, Latin beats and the thick bass of African Reggaetone to the mix, offers something for everyone. Without papers and not knowing any English, he went to Miami, Florida, to seek opportunity. After having had to sleep on the street, the fourth time was the charm, and he finally got his chance. At the age of 29, he reached a turning point: he had to choose between an American businessman who offered to invest a million dollars in him and Alberto Perlman, his compatriot, who had almost nothing. “I chose [Perlman] because I felt best with him. And I think I made the right decision,” he says today. Pérez is the inventor of Zumba, an exercise that has made him and Perlman millionaires; everyone from Queen Letizia of Spain to Michelle Obama, Garbiñe Muguruza and Victoria Beckham has enjoyed Zumba.
