Céleste Boursier-Mougenot: from here to ear

On November 25, Copenhagen Contemporary presents a vast installation by the acclaimed French artist Céleste Boursier-Mougenot, who represented France at the Venice Biennale in 2015.

This winter, French contemporary artist and composer Céleste Boursier-Mougenot will present his monumental installation from here to ear in one of the industrial exhibition halls at Copenhagen Contemporary (CC). Boursier-Mougenot has won worldwide recognition with his vast, acoustic installations that take their starting point in nature and the rhythms of everyday life—two aspects that are also evident in the work now about to be shown at CC.

A 600-square-meter hall will be transformed into a giant walk-through aviary where 88 living zebra finches will live. The aviary is equipped with sand, plants and nesting places—and, very importantly, with 18 bass guitars and electric guitars arranged horizontally on stands. Audiences are invited to walk around inside this living installation, watching as the birds flit around and perch on

Céleste Boursier-Mougenot

Born in Nice in 1961, Céleste Bousier-Mougenot lives and works in Sète. Although his works have been exhibited for almost 20 years in contemporary art spaces in France and abroad, they have more in common with the work of a musician. From 1985 to 1994 he was the composer of author/director Pascal Rambert’s “Side One Posthume Théâtre” company before embarking on a quest to give his music independent status through installations.

Céleste Boursier-Mougenot’s work has been exhibited on the international scene for a number of years. Indeed, he was the first French artist to win the International Studio Program (PS1) in New York in 1998-1999. Recent exhibitions include the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne in 2013, the Barbican Centre in London in 2010 and the Pinacothèque in Sao Paulo in 2009.

2015 is set to be an exceptional year for the artist: before his exhibition at Palais de Tokyo he represents France at the Contemporary Art Biennale in Venice (9 May – 22 November 2015) with an ambitious, hitherto unseen project rêvolutions, curated by

An extensive documentation on Céleste Boursier-Mougenot's installation for the French Pavilion of the 56th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale.
Born in Nice in 1961, Céleste Boursier-Mougenot now lives in Sète, and exhibits internationally. His work arises following his experience as a composer from 1985 to 1994. At that point, the artist embarked on giving an autonomous form to his music through the creation of installations. In 2015 he is representing France at the Venice Biennale, designing the exhibition rêvolutions (a play on the word “revolutions”, but also on the French word for dreams, “rêve”) as an organic island, with curator Emma Lavigne.
In Venice, Céleste Boursier-Mougenot revives our taste for the marvels of mannerist Italian gardens, just as he reaffirms his contemporary status, indicating an underlying political dimension. Seizing systems of control over living creatures and their movements in order to compose a poetic work where the attentive human can inhabit spaces of liberty and deviant beauty.
