Franco Fontana was born in 1933 in Modena. He took up photography in 1961 and joined an amateur club. He held his earliest solo shows in 1968 in Modena, his native city, which marked a turning point in his career. He has published over seventy books with Italian, French, German, Swiss, Spanish, American and Japanese publishers. His photographs have appeared worldwide in over 400 exhibitions, solo and collective. His images are in collections in over fifty public and private, Italian and international galleries, including the Bibliothèque Nationale, and the Maison Européenne de la Photographie, Paris; the George Eastman House International Museum of Photography, Rochester, the Musée de la Photographie, Arles, New York, the National Museum, Beijing, the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, the Metropolitan Museum of Photography, Tokyo, the Galleria Civica d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea, Turin, and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. Many companies have asked him to collaborate on advertising campaigns, he has published photographs in Time-Life, The New York Times, Vogue USA, Vogue Franc

FRANCO FONTANA: LANGUAGE OF COLOUR

We are very proud to present the first solo exhibition at Atlas Gallery inaugurating the recent representation of master photographer Franco Fontana. 

Born in Modena (Italy) in 1933, Fontana is one of the pioneers of colour photography, renowned for his intense and abstracted ‘scapes’: landscapes, seascapes, cityscapes and bodyscapes. His true subject is colour and how it can express something beyond visual reality, even when the literal subjects of the artist’s photographs are fields, buildings or city pavements.

The show will comprise of a variety of works from the 70s – 2017, including extra large master prints and an amazing group of unique polaroids. Like many artists, Fontana used the Polaroid camera to make images that are spontaneous, intimate and experimental. 

Fontana has worked in colour from the early 1960s, at the time a radical shift away from the established norms of black and white fine art photography. His work has won many awards, including when in 1992 Tokyo Metropolitan Museum named him as one of 23 photographers who

Franco Fontana (born 9 December 1933) is an Italian photographer. He is best known for his abstract color landscapes.

Biography

Franco Fontana was born in 1933 in Modena. He started taking photographs in the 1950s when he was working as a decorator in a furniture showroom.[1] In 1961 he joined a local amateur club in Modena. The experience would be a turning point in his career, and Fontana went on to have his first solo exhibition in 1965 at the Società Fotografica Subalpina, Turin[1] and at the Galleria della Sala di Cultura in Modena in 1968. Since then he has participated in more than 400 group and solo exhibitions.[2]

Fontana has photographed for advertising campaigns for brands such as Fiat, Volkswagen, Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane, Snam, Sony, Volvo, Versace, Canon, Kodak, Robe di Kappa, Swissair, and has been a magazine photographer for publications including Time,Life,Vogue (USA and France), Venerdì di Repubblica,Panorama, and with the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitu
