Monika: Today it is my pleasure and honor to interview Rachael Evelyn Booth, an American writer, poet, US Navy veteran, linguist, computer scientist, martial artist, entertainer, and the author of the biographical book titled “Wishing On A Star: My Journey Across the Gender Divide” (2016). Hello Rachael!
Rachael: Hi Monika! Thanks for talking with me.
Monika: Could you say a few words about yourself?
Rachael: I am a 64-year-old woman living with my wife in the beautiful mountains of New Hampshire. I grew up in rural northwestern Ohio where I first realized that there was something wrong inside of me. I would sit out in a little field behind our house waiting to wish on the first star so I could be a girl when I woke up the next morning. Thus the name of my first book.
As many other trans-people of my time did, I tried to find my way in society as a man by first joining the Navy, then getting married and having children all in an attempt to find something that would make me feel happy in my expected role in life. Nothing worked and all I ended up doi Profile Lead Occupational Therapist with over 20 years of experience working within a Mental Health and Learning Disabilities Foundation NHS trust in the North-East of England. Experience sitting on Royal College Occupational Therapy (RCOT) regional committees. Volunteer roles within the wider Occupational Therapy online community as a member of the OTalk and AbleOTUK teams. Professional interests include I am a 71-year-old retired transgender woman living with my wife of almost 28 years in the mountains of northern New Hampshire. When I retired, I was working as a Senior Computer Scientist programming, designing systems for the Navy's AEGIS shipboard weapons system. Before that, I was enlisted in the Navy during the Vietnam war as a Cryptologics Technician Interpreter (CTI) specializing in Mandarin Chinese and Arabic Languages. I also hold a second-degree black belt in Okinawa Kenpo Karate and Kobudo (open hand and weaponry) and I teach courses in Women's Self Defense and Assault Prevention. I am a guitarist and singer of 50 years and a semi-professional entertainer. In 2005 I was bitten by a tick that put me in a coma with Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. As a result of illness, which nearly killed me, I was left with traumatic brain injury and stroke which ended up making me retire at 55. I had to relearn to walk but after a few years was doing fine with a few residual physical limitations. I have two wonderful children from previous marriages and 4 beautiful grandchildre
