The Rev. S.M. Lockridge; Prominent San Diego Pastor

The Rev. S.M. Lockridge, 87, a major religious and social force in San Diego for decades. As pastor of Calvary Baptist Church and president of the California Missionary Baptist State Convention, he was known for his evangelical conferences, powerful preaching and civil rights activism. “He had a great sense of humor, but was always very serious when preaching the word of God,” said Councilman George Stevens, a Baptist minister. “He was a giant among preachers.” Lockridge was on the faculty of the Billy Graham School of Evangelism and the Greater Los Angeles Sunday School Convention. His publications included “Rekindling the Holy Fires” and “The Lordship of Christ.” The son of a preacher, he was born Shadrach Meshach Lockridge in Texas and graduated from Bishop College in Marshall, Texas. He began his ministry in Dallas in 1940 and in 1952 accepted the San Diego pastorate. Lockridge became an advisor to politicians such as San Diego Mayors Pete Wilson and Maureen O’Connor, Rep. Shadrach Meshach Lockridge (7 March 1913 – 4 April 2000) was the Pastor of Calvary Baptist Church, a prominent African-American congregation located in San Diego, California, from 1953 to 1993. He was known for his preaching across the United States and around the world.

Dr. Lockridge’s best-known message is a six and a half minute description of Jesus Christ, known as “That’s my King!” (see below for the written transcript) – When you hear Lockridge’s wonderful, deep black voice, describing the Lord Jesus in an audio recording of this sermon, it is deeply impressive & moving. Shadrach Meshach Lockridge (March 7, 1913 – April 4, 2000) was the Pastor of Calvary Baptist Church,[1] a prominent African-American congregation in San Diego, California, from 1953 to 1993. He was known for his preaching across the United States and around the world.[2]

Life and work

Lockridge was born in Robertson County, Texas, the oldest of eight children and the son of a Baptist minister. A graduate of Bishop College in Marshall, Texas, he worked for two years as a high school English teacher. In 1940 in Dallas, he felt led to preach. In 1941 he married Virgil Mae Thompson.[2]

In 1942, he accepted his first pastorate at Fourth Ward Baptist Church in Ennis, Texas. In August 1952, he was named pastor of Calva
