Dr. Don E. Saliers returned to Candler in 2014 as theologian-in-residence after retiring in 2007 as the William R. Cannon Distinguished Professor of Theology and Worship. For many years he directed the Master of Sacred Music program at Emory, and was an organist and choirmaster at Cannon Chapel for 35 years. Before joining the Candler faculty in 1974, Saliers taught at Yale Divinity School, and has taught in summer programs at Notre Dame, Boston College, Vancouver School of Theology, St. John’s University, and Boston University School of Theology.
An accomplished musician, theologian and scholar of liturgics, Saliers is the author of 15 books on the relationship between theology and worship practices, as well as more than 150 articles, essays, chapters in books and book reviews. He co-authored A Song to Sing, a Life to Live with his daughter Emily Saliers, a member of the Indigo Girls.

Don Saliers
American theologian
Don E. Saliers (born 1937) is an American theologian specializing in homiletics and liturgics. He was the William R. Cannon Distinguished Professor of Theology and Worship at the Candler School of Theology of Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. Although he retired from Candler in 2007, Professor Saliers returned to Candler as Theologian-in-Residence in 2015.[1]
Education
Saliers received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Ohio Wesleyan University, and both his Bachelor of Divinity and his Doctor of Philosophy degrees from Yale University.[2] He also attended the University of Cambridge.[1]
Career
He is a musician, theologian, and scholar of liturgics. Among the instruments he plays are the organ[3] and the piano[4] He is also a United Methodist pastor[3] and a poet.[5]

Biographical Sketch: Don E. Saliers
The Rev. Dr. Don E. Saliers is the William R. Cannon Distinguished Professor of Theology and Worship, Emeritus, at Emory University’s Candler School of Theology. Educated at Ohio Wesleyan, Yale Divinity School and Cambridge Universities, he received his doctoral degree from Yale University. Don taught at Yale Divinity School before joining the faculty at Emory in 1974.
Don has served local churches in rural Ohio and the inner city of New Haven. For the past 33 years he has been organist/choirmaster at Emory University’s Cannon Chapel, and has contributed to the United Methodist Hymnal, The Book of Worship, and to the recent UpperRoom Worshipbook. He lectures, preaches and leads retreats widely across North America, and has taught regularly at Notre Dame, St. John’s, Vancouver School of Theology and Boston College. He has served as president of the North American Academy of Liturgy and the Society for the Study of Christian Spirituality.
