From Cesare Zavattini and Paul Strand to Luigi Ghirri, Gianni Berengo Gardin, Olivo Barbieri, Vittore Fossati and others: from Oct. 23 to Nov. 21, 2021, an exhibition dedicated to "A Country," one of the most important photographic projects of the 20th century, will be held at Sarzana's Firmafede Fortress.

The Firmafede Fortress in Sarzana is hosting, from Oct. 23 to Nov. 21, an exhibition dedicated to one of the most important photographic projects of the 20th century, Un paese by Cesare Zavattini and Paul Strand, published by Einaudi in 1955 as a photobook or “film on paper.” The exhibition, titled Un’idea di paese, conceived and curated by Spazi Fotografici (Sarzana) with Fondazione Un Paese (Luzzara) and ISIA Urbino, is an exhibition inspired by the book Un paese, which still represents one of the most significant editorial works in the history of photography

A leading personality of the international culture

Despite the strong bond to the Emilian roots, the cultural experience of Cesare Zavattini is characterized by a remarkable international openness. Sure enough the Luzzarese writer has established himself as an authentic “global icon” of the cinematographic neorealism, characterizing his entire work for a marked transnational character. Zavattini’s work outside Italy was outstanding, developing an extensive network of exchanges and connections especially towards Ibero-American cultural environments (Spain, Cuba, Mexico and Argentina) and Eastern Europe (Hungary, Romania, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, Soviet Union) but also in the Anglo-Saxon area (Great Britain and the United States) as well as in other European contexts (France, Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, Austria) and non-European countries (including the African continent) where he went to carry out projects and collaborations, above all (but not only) in the cinematographic field.
