Dr. John E. Upledger is founder and medical director of The Upledger Institute, Inc.,® based in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. Dedicated to the natural enhancement of health, the Institute is recognized worldwide for its groundbreaking continuing-education programs, clinical research, and therapeutic services. Throughout his career as an osteopathic physician and surgeon, Dr. Upledger has been recognized as an innovator and leading proponent in the investigation of new therapies. His development of Cranio-Sacral Therapy in particular earned him an international reputation. In 2001 he was featured on CNN and in Time magazine as one of America’s next wave of innovators. Dr. Upledger is a Certified Specialist of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine, an Academic Fellow of the British Society of Osteopathy, and a Doctor of Science in alternative medicine. John Upledger, renowned Palm Beach Gardens doctor, dies at 80
Dr. John Edwin Upledger, a osteopathic physician and surgeon who treated conjoined twins, Olympic divers and professional athletes from his Palm Beach Gardens office, died Friday. The Detroit native was 80.
Known as craniosacral therapy, Dr. Upledger’s methods drew its share of critics, such as some members of the American Medical Association or the American Academy of Osteopathy.
“My father was viewed as either a genius or a quack. But he had enough results and credentials behind him that it didn’t bother him,” said his son, John, 52, CEO of the Upledger Institute International Inc., which was founded by his father and has been in Oak Park Plaza on Prosperity Farms Road for 25 years.
Dr. Upledger, who played the piano and accordion, originally wanted to be a jazz musician. He decided on a medical career after a stint in the U.S. Coast Guard during the 1950s.
