HELSINKI, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- Finnish president Sauli Niinisto, 69, was re-elected on Sunday for a second six-year term following a landslide victory with 62.7 percent of the votes.
When starting his first term in 2012, he did not have much experience in international politics, but at the start of his second term he is already a head of state known personally to the leaders of world powers.
Niinisto comes from a middle class family in the town of Salo in southwestern Finland. His father worked as circulation manager of the local newspaper, and his mother was a nurse.
He studied law at Turku University and graduated in 1974. Unlike many future politicians, he was not very active in student politics.
EARLY POLITICAL CAREER
After some years of practicing law in his hometown, Niinisto was elected into the parliament on the conservative list in 1987 after two failed attempts.

Sauli Niinistö
Sauli Väinämö Niinistö (born 24 August 1948) is a former Finnish president. He was President of Finland from 2012 until 2024.
A lawyer by education, Niinistö was Minister of Finance from 1996 to 2003 and the National Coalition Party candidate in the 2006 presidential election. He served as the Speaker of the Parliament of Finland from 2007 to 2011 and has been the Honorary President of the European People's Party (EPP) since 2002.
Niinistö was the National Coalition Party candidate in the 2012 presidential election, beating Pekka Haavisto of the Green League with 62.6% of the vote in the decisive second round. Niinistö assumed office on 1 March 2012, and is the first president from the National Coalition Party since Juho Kusti Paasikivi, who left office in 1956.
Niinistö served on the municipal council of Salo from 1977 to 1992 and was elected a Member of the Finnish Parliament (Eduskunta) from the district of Finland Proper in 1987. In 1994 he was chosen to lead the National Coalition Party as the party chairman

Biography of Sauli Niinistö
Sauli Niinistö was the 12th President of the Republic of Finland. He was inaugurated on 1 March 2012 and was re-elected for another six-year term in January 2018. His second term in office began on 1 February 2018.
Sauli Niinistö was born in Salo on 24 August 1948. He graduated from the University of Turku with a Master of Laws degree in 1974, after which he worked as a Rural Police Chief and, for more than ten years, as an Assistant Judge at the Turku Court of Appeal. He also practiced law as an attorney and gained experience of corporate administration. His political career began in 1977, when he was elected to the Town Council of Salo. He continued to hold elected positions in local government until the 1990s.
Sauli Niinistö was first elected to Parliament in 1987. During his time as a Member of Parliament, he served as Chairman of the Constitutional Law Committee. In 1995, he was appointed Minister of Justice and Deputy Prime Minister. In 1996, he moved to the Ministry of Finance and became Finland’s longest-serving Minister of Finance. At
