Director of Winemaking, acclaimed vigneron Larry Cherubino, together with an acclaimed team of winemakers and viticulturists achieves this via a myriad of vineyards across key Australian wine regions, in particular West Australia’s Margaret River and Great Southern and South Australia’s McLaren Vale.

Vineyards are tended as organically as possible and wines are made with minimal intervention, reflecting a dedication to sustainable grape growing and wine production practices.

Mr Robert Oatley AO

Robert Oatley AO (1928–2016), businessman, was one of Australia’s most successful wine industry figures. Sydney-born, he acquired a Hunter Valley vineyard, Rosemount Estate, in the late 1960s having previously worked as an exporter of coffee and cocoa beans. Rosemount produced its first vintage in 1974, and over the ensuing decades Oatley built the winery into Australia’s largest family-owned wine producer, the company having a value of $1.4 billion when it was sold to Southcorp Wines in 2001. The Oatley family re-entered the wine business in 2006 with the establishment of Oatley Wines. In 2003, he purchased Hamilton Island and redeveloped it. A keen sailor, Oatley was perhaps best-known as the owner of the yacht Wild Oats, which to date has taken line honours a record-breaking eight times in the Sydney to Hobart yacht race. In the fields of wine, coffee, tourism and yachting, Bob Oatley not only made his mark nationally and internationally but also raised Australia’s profile and boosted its prosperity. The Oatley family history goes back to almost the beginning of European settlement in Australia, as evidenced by the name carried by the Sydney suburb of Oatley.

That family name is now renowned in wine, tourism and yachting – all due to Bob Oatley, his dedication to his country and solid family enterprise.

Bob Oatley was a proud and passionate fifth-generation Australian who took Australian wine to the world.

He built a diverse family business that runs from vineyards, wineries and cattle stations, through to thoroughbred horses and luxury tourism at Hamilton Island on Australia’s iconic Great Barrier Reef.

It’s often said that success is all a matter of timing and Bob Oatley had that in spades.
