Maria Pinto: 25 Years is a celebration of Maria Pinto’s first 25 years of working at the intersection of art and fashion in Chicago. Through her creations, Pinto has tracked the changing role of fashion in women’s lives. From precious couture to collections made from high-tech fabrics, Pinto’s work mirrors the ways in which women have engaged in the larger community, both in Chicago and nationally.
The exhibition features a rotating display of garments from Pinto’s archive, along with fashion photography from many Chicago-based collaborators, such as Sandro Miller, Brian Kuhlmann, Jeff Stella, Nathan Beckner, and Yuya Ohashi. A centerpiece of the exhibition will be a series of photos shot by Sandro Miller, featuring a new capsule collection she designed for her ready-to-wear label, M2057 by Maria Pinto, to celebrate her 25 years in fashion design. NEW YORK - Maria Pinto isn't particularly interested in coattails, considering the Chicago-based designer hasn't campaigned to become a household name despite being a fashion favorite of soon-to-be first lady Michelle Obama.
Obama chose a purple Pinto sheath on the night her husband secured the Democratic nomination and an ocean-blue one the night she spoke at the Democratic National Convention. She wore a Pinto coat the chilly day in Springfield, Ill., when Barack Obama announced his candidacy for president, and a periwinkle dress by Pinto on the cover of Newsweek.
But the designer herself has spent the last few months as she did the ones that came before Obama-mania, building a business of loyal customers while approaching fashion with an artful, not trendy, eye.

Maria V. Pinto (born 1957) is a fashion designer from Chicago, Illinois. She has designed clothing for Oprah Winfrey, the Joffrey Ballet, Marcia Gay Harden, and Michelle Obama.
Early life
Maria Pinto was born in the South Side of Chicago, Illinois, near Chinatown.[1] She and her twin brother are the youngest of seven children.[2][3] Her parents, Constantino and Virginia Pinto, are a sanitation worker and a caterer, respectively. When she was still young, her family moved to the suburbs of Chicago.[4]
When Pinto was 10, she started reading a neighbor's copies of Women's Wear Daily.[5] In eighth grade, she started sewing her own clothes after getting a sewing machine.[2][5] She attended Palatine High School,[6] where she sold clothes to her friends at the age of 15,[5][7] and eventually sewed her own prom dress from a Halston pattern.[8]
