Sydney Devine (born Cleland, Lanarkshire 1940 - 13th February 2021) was a Scot and' it's very own rhinestone cowboy, a singer whose career began with a television appearance in 1953 at the age of thirteen, developed during eight years touring with the White Heather Group. When visiting Hawaii with Andy Stewart's band, he heard the Hawaiian singer Don Ho perform Tiny Bubbles; this became Devine's signature tune and he went on to sell fifteen million albums. His record sales were revived in December 2005 when a frothy drink making machine was advertised on television using Don Ho's version of Tiny Bubbles. YUP

    Sydney DevineMBE (11 January 1940 – 13 February 2021) was a Scottish singer. He sold 15 million albums during his career, reached the UK's top 20 albums chart and was part of the White Heather Club troupe.

    Life and career

    Sydney Devine was born in Bellside, a settlement near the village of Cleland, North Lanarkshire, Scotland, in January 1940.

    Known for his charismatic personality, distinctive singing style and rhinestone encrusted stage suits Sydney first achieved a measure of fame as a boy through an extraordinary ability to reproduce bird calls. This was noticed by the tenor Robert Wilson and the young Sydneys whistling talents appeared on the recording of "Cottage By The Lea".

    He went on to perform his bird whistling set in various venues including THE Hippodrome in London as part of the revue "Wild Grows The Heather".

    When the theatre run of Wild Grows The Heather finished he once again teamed up with Robert Wilson in Wilsons "White Heather Group" troupe.

    Sydney grew up in the Lanarkshire village of Cleland. He was known around the village as the boy whistler and soprano. His talent was recognised by Kathleen Garscadden of "Children's Hour" who got him a spot on television in London, that was followed by eight years touring with the White Heather Group.
    Sydney often found himself on the road with the late Alex Harvey, the singer who was to form the sensational Alex Harvey Band. A guy in the group Joe Moretti, raised his interest in country music and soon he was performing country songs himself.
    On a visit to South Africa, Sydney was heard by a record producer who offered him a contract. That record contract found an outlet in this country and thus began Sydney's recording career. Sydney is now a Top-Selling British Country music performer selling over five million albums.
