Abraham Verghese

American physician, author, professor (born 1955)

Abraham Verghese (born 1955) is an American physician and author. He is the Linda R. Meier and Joan F. Lane Provostial Professor of Medicine, Vice Chair for the Theory & Practice of Medicine, and Internal Medicine Clerkship Director at Stanford University Medical School.[1][2][3] In addition, he is the author of four best-selling books: two memoirs and two novels. He is the co-host with Eric Topol of the MedscapepodcastMedicine and the Machine.[4]

In 2011, Verghese was elected a member of the Institute of Medicine.[5] In 2014, he received the 19th Annual Heinz Award in the Arts and Humanities.[6]President Barack Obama presented him with the National Humanities Medal in 2015.[7][8] In 2023, he was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship.[9] He has received six honorary doctorate degrees.[1]

Verghese was born in Ethiopia to Orthodox Christian parents from Kerala, India, who worked as teachers.

Education

Varghese completed a graduate degree in Liberal Arts at the University of Madras in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. He then followed that with a graduate degree in Journalism from Baylor University in Waco, Texas.

Conferences

In 1985 he organized a conference in Dallas that brought together a number of Atheist and Theists to debate.Varghese organized a conference at Yale on March 1-3, 1986 titled Artificial Intelligence and the Human Mind. The conference was sponsored by TRUTH: A Journal of Modern Thought and The International Institute for Mankind Participants for the conference included "four Nobel Laureates and six Gifford Lecturers, a few of the foremost researchers in Artificial Intelligence and noted physicists, brain scientists, psychologists and philosophers."Additionally he attended The 1993 Parliament of World's Religions, in Chicago, and was a panelist for the Science and Religion forum.He also attended and participated in the Millennium World Peace Summit of Religious and Spiritual Leaders held August 28, 2000
