Elizabeth Artz never wanted children. Her passion was journalism and her devotion was to finding that next big story. She kept a single-minded focus on her work as a reporter and anchor at NBC-13 in Birmingham.

All that changed on January 14, 2006, when Artz and her husband Brad
Hayes welcomed their son Jack into the world. "Now my child is my first priority," Artz says. "At one time I would have been fighting to go to Iraq or Lebanon, but now I don't want to do anything to risk my life because I want to see him grow up."

Her passion for her work hasn't wavered, but motherhood has changed her approach to it.

"People used to call me cold-hearted," she says as she recounts the story of a recent car accident in which a woman's husband and daughter were killed. Having a child of her own has made it harder to distance herself from the emotion of such tragedies. When she thinks of her own child, she can begin to imagine the grief that woman must feel.
