Sam Presti Biography


Sam Presti is the general manager of the Oklahoma City Thunder. He was originally hired as GM by the organization while they were still the Seattle Sonics in 2007. Presti is credited with establishing a culture of winning once they relocated to Oklahoma City. He oversaw the drafting of franchise cornerstones Kevin Durant, James Harden and Russell Westbrook. That trio helped lead the Thunder to the NBA Finals in 2012. Presti has always been regarded as one of the more aggressive GMs in basketball. Dating back to his time in Seattle, he traded standouts, Ray Allen and Rashard Lewis, helping usher in the success that would later follow in Oklahoma City. Presti built a reputation while working in the San Antonio Spurs organizations. He originally started as an intern under general manager R.C. Buford. Presti played college basketball at the Division III level at Virginia Wesleyan University and Emerson College.

‘C’ student made good: Presti was born in Concord, Mass., an only child whose parents divorced when he was a teenager. A 2017 Sports Illustrated profile noted that he wasn’t much of a student at Concord-Carlisle Regional High, but eventually got traction when he spent time with a group of mostly African-American kids bused from neighborhoods far from his suburb and the teacher (Harriett Stevens) who supervised them. As a basketball player, Presti impressed his teammates enough to earn the nickname “Bob Sura,” after the Florida State product who played 10 NBA seasons.
