Indian poet and lyricist (1928–1975)

Vayalar Ramavarma (25 March 1928 – 27 October 1975), also known as Vayalar,[1] was an Indian poet and lyricist of Malayalam language. He was known for his poems which include Sargasangeetham, Mulankaadu, Padamudrakal, Aayisha and Oru Judas janikkunnu and for around 1,300 songs he penned for 256 Malayalam films. He received the National Film Award for Best Lyrics in 1972 and was the winner of the Kerala State Film Award for Best Lyricist in its year of inception which he received three more times. He was also a recipient of the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Poetry in 1962. [2][3][4] His collaborations with G. Devarajan produced the golden era of Malayalam film music and many songs written and composed by these duo remain the ever green classics in Malayalam. Ramavarma is regarded as one of the most successful and critically acclaimed lyricist in the history of Malayalam cinema.[5][6]

Vayalar Rama Varma, who rose to be identified by simply VAYALAR, is the most adored lyricist by the Malayalam film music fans. He was not criticised during his lifetime for using meaningless and wrong words. The flamboyant lyricist led a careless life, being pampered by admirers often detriment to his health. Many of his close friends attributed his ill-health to uncontrolled addiction to alcohol. He was willing to sacrifice friendship rather giving up alcoholism. Some of his ‘so called’ close friends did not do a benevolent act but led him to an untimely health. He was only 47 when he breathed his last.

Vayalar is a small hamlet near Cherthala in Alappuzha district. Even though it was connected to Cherthala by road only in 1970, it was known to the external world because of the peasants’ unrest and Vayalar Rama Varma. Vayalar Ramavarma (March 28, 1928 - October 27, 1975), often known as Vayalar, was a modern Malayalam poet and lyricist. His famous works include Sargasangeetham, Mulankaadu, Padamudrakal, Aayisha, Oru Judas janikkunnu.

Born in the village of Vayalar, in Alappuzha district, Kerala, Vayalar belonged to an aristocratic family but became a poet of the proletariat inspired by revolutionary ideals. His parents were Vellarappally Kerala Varma and Vayalar Raghavaparambil Ambalika Thamburatty. He was awarded Kerala Sahithya Academy Award (Kerala literary academy award) in 1961 for Sargasangeetham, the President's gold medal for best lyricist in 1974, and the Kerala state film award for best lyricist three times. The Vayalar award for Malayalam literature, given on October 27 each year, was instituted in his memory.
