On of the foremost advocates of dietary treatment of cancer is Dr. Johanna Budwig. Born in 1908 in the German city of Essen, she devoted her adult life to studying the role of foods, particularly fats and oils, in both causing and preventing cancer. A qualified pharmaceutical chemist as well as a physicist and student of physiology, medicine, and biochemistry, in the early 1950's Johanna Budwig invented a new way of analyzing fat. She called it "paper chromatology". Her studies made it possible to distinguish between various fats for the first time, and to isolate fatty acids in a single drop of blood.
She also discovered that defective fat metabolism is at the root of many of our "incurable" diseases, such as arteriosclerosis, diabetes, rheumatism, asthma, heart disease and cancer. Consequently, she divided fats in

Dr. Johanna Budwig (1908-2003), the creator of the Oil-Protein Diet, was known as the foremost expert on Omega-3 fatty acids. Dr. Budwig was a renowned German scientist with extensive training in natural sciences including chemistry, bio-chemistry, pharmacology, and physics. She was a widely published author and also served as the chief expert of drugs and fats for The Federal Health Office in Germany. This is equivalent to Food and Drug Administration in The United States, and while working there, Dr. Budwig was responsible for overseeing pharmaceuticals and food products.
Dr. Budwig is widely considered to be the world's foremost expert on fats, and how they relate to disease. She was a pioneer in the research and use of Omega-3 fatty acids, which are now getting much attention in the mainstream. Much of Dr. Budwig's work focused on the role of "bad" fats in metabolic defects at the cellular level. These metabolic defects are considered by many scientists to be a fundamental cause of cancer.
