John R. McDaniel was born in Baltimore, Maryland on October 20th, 1923 to LeRoy and Ada McDaniel. He was the youngest of four children. When he was four years old, the family moved to Forest Hills, where he went to elementary, middle, and high school there. He learned to play tennis at the local club, and considered turning pro.

He enrolled in Hofstra College in Hempstead where he obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Art anda Master’s in Education. A runner as well as a tennis player, he was a member of the crosscountry team. At the college, he met his wife-to-be Jean, who was also pursuing a degree in Art. They were married in 1953, had a son, Keith, 1955.

After graduation, they bought a house on Long Island in West Islip, and he found a job teaching Art to elementary school students in nearby Commack. In the summer of 1960, he and his wife entered their paintings at an outdoor art show in Westhampton Beach and another in Mystic, Connecticut the following weekend. Dr. McDaniel joined the Exercise Physiology Department in 2010. He received his Master's degree from the University of South Carolina and his Doctoral degree from the University of Utah. During his Doctoral training he employed both animal and human models to investigate basic muscle function. He then joined Russell Richardson's laboratory team during two years of post-doctoral training at the Salt Lake City Veterans Affairs Medical Center. During those years his research focused on vascular health and blood flow regulation in both healthy and diseased populations. Since he became a faculty member at Kent State University he has continued to investigate peripheral vascular function in a variety of populations including Parkinson's disease, stroke and spinal cord injured patients. In addition, he continues to utilize single-leg cycling as a exercise modality to maximize peripheral adaptations in young and old healthy populations.

John McDaniel is a Tony and Grammy award-winning musician, conductor, and composer with an impressive career in both Broadway and television. Born on September 2, 1961, in Quincy, Illinois, McDaniel grew up in a musical family and started playing the piano at the age of five. He went on to study at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and later moved to New York City to pursue his career in the entertainment industry.

McDaniel made his Broadway debut in 1990 as the conductor and pianist for the musical "Grease." He went on to work on several other Broadway productions, including "Miss Saigon," "Annie Get Your Gun," and "Taboo." In 2004, he won a Tony Award for Best Orchestrations for the Broadway revival of "Annie Get Your Gun."
In addition to his work on Broadway, McDaniel has also made a name for himself in the television industry. He served as the musical director and composer for "The Rosie O'Donnell Show" from 1996 to 2002, earning three Daytime Emmy Awards for his work on th
