As one of Safewayâs top female executives, Larree Renda is responsible for all retail strategies and a broad range of administrative functions for one of the largest food and drug retailers in North America. Her responsibilities include retail strategy, labor relations, public affairs, government relations, health initiatives, human resources, quality assurance and consumer protection, industrial engineering, reengineering, and communications. She also manages the companyâs relationship with Casa Ley, Safewayâs joint venture in Mexico, where she is also a member of the Board of Directors.

Safeway has a 49% interest in Casa Ley, S.A. de C.V., which operates 137 food and general merchandise stores in western Mexico. Larree began her Safeway career in 1974 at the age of 16. She progressed through Safewayâs retail ranks and earned the distinction of being the youngest store manager, district manager and retail operations manager in Safewayâs 80-year history. Shirley R. Chilton (1982)

Shirley R. Chilton, the first woman to hold the top volunteer position at the California Chamber of Commerce, joined the CalChamber Board in 1976, the same year she founded and became chairman of the board of Clavis Corporation, a small business in Marina del Rey specializing in financial and real estate investment consulting.

She served as a member of the CalChamber Executive Committee and officer for several years before being elected to head the CalChamber Board of Directors in 1982. At the time, she was the first woman to hold the top volunteer position in any state chamber of commerce throughout the United States.

In 1983, Governor George Deukmejian named her secretary of the State and Consumer Services Agency. In that position, which she held until 1991, she served as a member of the Governor’s Cabinet and was responsible for overseeing 11 departments and more than 50 boards, bureaus and commissions.

We are in Iowa. We are near the Raccoon River. It is snowing gently. It snows more months than not, in Iowa. A girl and her brother are hiding behind a tree on the corner of Caulder and Seventh. She is ten years old. This is on the south side of Des Moines where most of the Italians live. Her parish is Saint Anthony’s. Her grandfather is Anthony. Her brother is Anthony. Her family is from Tuscany. She and her brother Anthony are making snowballs. They are plotting to attack cars and one particular car comes into view, a pristine meticulous beautiful 1967 Ford Mustang owned by a hot-tempered boy whose family runs the local Dairy Queen. His name is Francis. His family is from Sicily. They hear the car grumbling faintly through the snow and they take up their positions and when Frank Renda’s car thunders past they pelt it with snowballs and then Tony and Larree Moro take off running as fast as they can from the burly boy who leaps roaring out of his car, not ever imagining that someday, amazingly, incredibly, this girl sprinting into the whirling
