“The cat has been set among the pigeons. The move is to create confusion in Congress ranks, as there are many disgruntled individuals and divisions in the party that can be exploited,” a senior leader in the JD(S)-BJP alliance said.

Ironically, in the 2022 Rajya Sabha polls, it had been cross-voting by two JD(S) MLAs that had caused the surprise defeat of Reddy, then a JD(S) candidate. JD(S) leader H D Kumaraswamy is believed to be still smarting from the loss of his close aide, which happened when the Congress did not transfer its excess votes to Reddy, and instead fielded an extra candidate, Mansoor Ali Khan. The BJP’s dark horse Lahar Singh won the seat after two JDS MLAs cross-voted, and later joined the Congress.

RS Polls: NDA fields wealthy businessman Kupendra Reddy as fifth candidate from Karnataka

JDSleader Kupendra Reddyemerged as the surprise fifth candidate for the Rajya Sabhaelection from Karnataka. He filed the nomination papers for the February 27 polls, in which MLAs are the voters, in the presence of JDS and BJPleaders.

There are only four vacancies, and one BJP and three Congresscandidates would have won unopposed, but the contest has taken a curious turn with the entry of Reddy as NDAcandidate.

The development is sure to send a chill in the Congress camp, causing worries of cross voting. The Congress on Wednesday night named AICCleader Ajay Maken, and sitting RS members GC Chandrashekar and Syed Naseer Hussain, for the three seats. Maken is taking the seat vacated by Dalit writer L Hanumanthaiah. The BJP has named former MLC Narayansa Bhandage for the outgoing member Rajeev Chandrasekhar’s seat.
