Larry Wert
Born December 17, 1922 in Athens, Illinois, Vincent T. Wasilewski would become the 18th President of the National Association of Broadcasters in January 1965. Wasilewski entered the University Of Illinois College Of Engineering in 1940, but World War II would interrupt his studies. He served in the US Air Force from September 1942 until October 1945, and returned to the University at the close of the war. He switched to political science and received his bachelor’s degree in 1948, followed by a degree of Doctor of Jurisprudence the following year. Wasilewski joined the NAB’s legal staff in 1949, where he spent his entire professional career. Like any true broadcaster, Wasilewski was no stranger to public service, having served on the Board of Directors of the Advertising Council, the Advisory Council on Federal Reports and the American Advertising Federation.
The IBA inducted Wasilewski into its Hall of Fame in 1976. In his honor, the IBA renamed its “Broadcaster of the Year Award” in 1989, as the “Vincent T. Wasilewski Award.” The

The Italian Cultural Center will honor Riverside resident Larry Wert, president and general manager of NBC5 Chicago, with its Man of the Year Award at 6 p.m., March 1 at Alta Villa Banquets in Addison.
“Larry Wert is a modern Italian American who supports Casa Italia and vigorously celebrates his ethnic background,” says Lisa Turano Solano, event chairperson. “He creates opportunities to highlight Italian American life in Chicago including the history of his family, his heritage and the traditions associated with Casa Italia.”
Recently Wert was instrumental in procuring a prime time slot for the airing of the Modio Media film, “And They Came to Chicago: The Italian American Legacy.”
“This film documents 150 years of the Italian American experience in Chicago,” Solano says. “Without his help and support, this film might have ended up on an obscure cable station without the type of exposure it received on NBC and WTTW. Larry Ralph Wert of Oakdale, Minnesota passed away peacefully, Friday July 30, 2021 at his home with his family by his side.
Larry is survived by his wife Cheryl (Sheri) Wert & their two daughters Dawn Wert of Oakdale, MN and Robin Wert (Roberts) of Woodbury, MN & her husband Nick; two grandchildren , Zoey & Colton Roberts.
He was preceded in death by his parents Ralph and Helene Wert, and his sister Lucille Kopcial. Larry was born September 2, 1934 in Mansfield, OH. Graduated from Madison Senior High School in 1952. Attended The Ohio State University from 1952-1954 majoring in Electric Engineering. Active Duty with the Armed Forces from February 6th, 1957 to Feb 5th, 1959 as a SP5. Larry was a devoted husband, father & grandfather. Sports was his passion no matter the sport especially when it came to his family. Larry was at every event no matter the time or day of the week,
even towards the end of Larry’s life nothing would stop him from coming to his grandchildren’s softball, baseball or football games.
